Chapter Eighteen

A slow, mournful howl developed inside me as I made my way to see her again. It sat in the pit of my stomach, making me feel sick. Before I descended the stairs to the meeting room, I saw Kylie in the front lobby getting her watch removed. A cold feeling brushed the innermost part of my being. I was letting fear take over. I needed to believe in my decision to stay. I needed to remember the joy, the warmth, the peace, I’d felt in making it. When I walked through the door to the meeting room, Ms. Mackley was sitting at the table writing something.

“Take a seat,” she said. “So, I guess you have chosen to stay with us?”

“Yes.”

“Good choice. We’ll get word to your parents that we need to keep you here for a while longer. Then, when you turn eighteen, your time is yours. I’d like to tell you that you will love it here, but, as you know, you won’t be staying here much longer. You were scheduled to move on to a more advanced training center tomorrow, but an opportunity has arisen that I think you will like. You have the chance to go on a mission tomorrow. It will be a baptism by fire considering you haven’t completed all the practicals or attended the advanced training courses.”

“Tomorrow?” I questioned, hoping by doing so, the date would change.

“Well, I guess technically it starts today. You will be briefed on the assignment in about thirty minutes.”

I realized she’d been banking on me staying. She’d intended to tell me this when we’d met earlier. Then she’d gotten the call. She had to hope I’d stay. I had probably given her a heart attack when I hadn’t decided immediately, though it didn’t show on any part of her body. She was one controlled woman.

“Obviously, you’ve missed many of the practicals—but at least you got the written instructions for all levels.”

How did she know that? I’d never told her.

“I’ll let your handler know you need some practical training while in the field because they’ll be expecting you to have already practiced opening safes, hot-wiring cars, and other things. It will be a learning experience for both of us as we discover how well your brain processes the practical without experience. I will load your watch with as many video practicals as I can, but I don’t think anything translates better than the real hands-on stuff. If our lock specialist is available tonight, I’ll have her work with you this evening.” Her eyes darted toward the broken door knob.

“Why are you rushing this? Just let me have the time I need to get the practical experience they expect me to have.”

“We are in a crunch and don’t have time to wait.”

“What is so important about this mission that you—”

“When I got wind of this mission, I couldn’t believe just how perfect you are for it. Wait until you hear the details. I can’t believe our luck.”

I didn’t miss the fact that she said, our luck and not your luck.
